Are you, or your young soccer playing child, interested in becoming a soccer referee. It's a great way to learn more about the game we love, improve personal confidence and people management skills as well as have fun and keep fit. Oh...you also get paid for it!
Grapevine / Southlake Soccer holds Referee Clinics each off-season. Fall season clinics are held in July and August. Spring season clinics are held in January and February.
Participants must attend all sessions for all days (No exceptions).
For the Grade 9 Recreational Referee Certification, candidates must be 12 years old on or before March 1st for Spring Season, or September 1st for Fall Season. No experience required, however playing experience is helpful. Upon completion, you may then work with your local association and assignor to receive match assignments on Recreational youth matches up to and including the U14 age group, both centers and lines. Grade 9 referees may also serve as Assistant Referees on competitive matches up to U14.
For the Grade 8 Basic Referee Certification, candidates must be 14 years old or older, on or before March 1st for Spring season, September 1st for Fall season. No experience required, however playing experience is helpful. As a Grade 8 Referee you may referee all age groups. Progression to older age groups will be dependent on your individual experience and ability as you gain the confidence of your local assignor.
Each clinic is limited to 30 participants of which 15 are reserved for Grapevine and / or Southlake residents. Candidates are invited to participate on a first-come basis, and usually we have an extensive wait-list from candidate requests during the season. The clinic fee/registration fee are paid in advance by the candidate (GSSA no longer covers the clinic fee as in years past) for the clinic when registering with the online process. Contact the GSSA Referee Commissioner Mike Wichman at: mrw04@yahoo.com.
If you are interested, please send the following information to the email address listed above:
- Name
- Address (Street, City, Zip)
- Home Telephone Number
- Date of Birth
- Local Soccer association if not a Grapevine or Southlake resident
If you are not able to make this clinic or have not been allocated a space on this clinic, but are interested in becoming a referee, check out the North Texas Website for clinics in other places, or for future GSSA run clinics: http://www.ntxsoccer.org/referee/gradesandclinic.aspx. Taking a clinic in another location qualifies the candidate to officiate games anywhere in Texas and the US. Let us know right away if you complete certification elsewhere so we can get games assigned to you.
If you are already a certified referee and are looking for games, please contact the referee assignor John Levitt at: assignor@gssasoccer.org.
Reminders
- If you are looking for assignments, please contact John Levitt directly. If he's not calling you then it's likely everyone else has contacted him and taken the assignments. assignor@gssasoccer.org
- To get paid, the middles on all games MUST turn in their game sheets (or copies). Be sure to include the names of the AR's on the game so they can get paid.

Referee Email Updates
|
Referees, we need your email addresses. If you have not received an email about the upcoming North Texas referee training classes, then we don't have your email address. While we plan on using the gssasoccer.org website for sending out much of our information, we plan on using emails to get last minute notices and reminders sent out to our community. If you would like to get on our email list, please send your email address to Mike Wichman, Referee Commissioner at mrw04@yahoo.com
